While I'm looking through some articles about solutions to combat global warming I found something that I couldn't believe. We hear about it, we see it in major cities, But did you know that we breath it as well? Air pollution has had presented itself as a major issue on our planet.
Wildlife and Man/Woman have to deal and fallen victim to air pollution in many ways. We all know about this for years now (All of our lives for that matter). But the WHO organization has a study in 2022 about the air quality of the planet as a whole, and found that 99 percent of the world is breathing in polluted air. 99% OF THE PLANET?!
Most of the planet (99%) of earth's population is breathing polluted air. 8 billion plus people are somehow, some way still breathing in pollution and here is how (www.greenmatters.com/p/air-quality-awareness-week)
For starters pollution can stay in the air (atmosphere) for YEARS and can just linger from planes/jets and even boats. Industrial activities generate significant amounts of pollutants, including both solid and hazardous wastes, that adversely affect air quality, soil, and water resources.
Most of the world has dirty air, with just 17% of cities globally meeting air pollution guidelines (I wonder which cities in the USA are within or outside of that 17%) This no question has a horrible effect on the wildlife as well as land that people dont normal touch can still get tainted by what we humans are doing to the air quaility. But what about the long term issues we humans that caused this will have to face? (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/majority-of-the-worlds-population-breathes-dirty-air-report-says)
The long term breathing of this polluted air means the chance of getting respiratory illnesses including Lung Cancer, and even Alzheimer’s disease are most definitely very likely to go up in cases if 99% OF EARTH IS BREATHING POLLUTED AIR! (That's just one of the craziest Stats I have ever heard all semester.) Now that we now know that literally everyone is breathing polluted air all over the world, will the powers that be finally see that the planet is saying either "Its Stinks, or "I can't see", to even "I Can't Breath" ? What can help is the Slashing of Fossil fuels from Coal, Oil, Gas. If Those measures were in place to replace these energy creators and terrible polluters with something renewable. Will profits and big subsides out-weight the pure need to change? Maybe its time to start thinking about the people in every country on earth instead of trying to take every dollar on earth.
I didn't realize how much of the air that we breath in is considered polluted. Getting rid of fossil fuels would just help reduce the impact of climate change, but increase our health. Great post.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this post. It’s insanely crazy that it is possible none of us have had the chance to breathe non-polluted air and we won’t for our entire lives.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a pressing concern for our environment and overall air quality. I have read several reports on the damage climate change and global warming have caused in our environment, especially the atmosphere. Now more than ever, we have higher asthma rates and respiratory issues related to air pollution. It's sad we poison so much of our beautiful Earth.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that 99% of the worlds population is breathing polluted air is beyond alarming. This should be getting far more attention. It's frustrating that despite these statistics, there's still so much resistance to transitioning away from fossil fuels.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, it would be hard to make a case against these statistics.
Delete99% is an alarming and rare statistic in any scenario but hearing that it's for 99% of the population breathing polluted air? Very unsettling and it makes you wonder where we end up in this stat. Especially because there are countries must worse off than us.
ReplyDeleteIt is horrible that 99% of the worlds population is stuck breathing polluted air. I am curious/worried about the impact that this is also having on wildlife around the world, especially those in close proximity to heavily polluted cities.
ReplyDeleteWith 99% of the global population breathing polluted air, it is imperative that authorities recognize the urgent need for action to combat air pollution and protect public health and the environment.
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy to think that 99% of people are breathing polluted air. I check the air quality everyday, because I am always super curious about it, and it always tells me the air quality is good, but now I am wondering good to what standards. It is just unfortunate that there is nowhere you can go where you won't breathe polluted air due to industrial processes, and motor transports.
ReplyDeleteIts a hard pill to swallow that 99% of the worlds air is polluted. I know this freaks a lot of people out but the only thing we can do is come up with solutions to pollution. We have 8 billion people on earth maybe that is 8 billion solutions.
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable to think that we are truly surrounded by pollutions of all forms. It seems to me that nowhere is safe now except for maybe the most remote parts of antarctica. I believe you when you say it stays in the air for years because it is so potent and there is no real way yet to rid ourselves of it all.
ReplyDeleteI have very little conscious knowledge of this, since the air quality stat on our weather app almost makes me desensitized to it. The public masses are keen on assuming nature is naturally supposed to be this way, and that there should be days where visibility is low and you cough just taking a walk down the block. While we are fortunate in America, it does not mean we should be backing down from taking action. Everyone deserves clean breathing air and drinking water, and its an injustice that big corporations don't care.
ReplyDeleteAs someone with asthma, these sort of statistics and realities are exceptionally scary. I can't help but wonder how much this pollution is exacerbating my condition.
ReplyDeleteAir pollution is so terrifying, I hope to see more action towards reducing this high percentage of individuals breathing in polluted air
ReplyDeleteI recently read an article, from MLive I think, saying that the greater Kalamazoo area has been experiencing reduced air quality recently as a result of non-point, particulate air pollution, meaning they don't know where it's coming from, and may not be coming from just one source. They think it may be a combination of drought-produced dust blown around, increased automobile activity, and industrial activity. They'll be looking into it further with petitions to the EPA and EGLE, but it goes to show nobody's immune to air pollution, not even and especially not developed nations.
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting! Our weather app has a gauge for "air quality" which is something you don't often consider. Even if it says "good" it doesn't mean the air isn't still harmful and polluted.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that air pollution was linked to Alzheimer's! And the fact that 99% of the population is breathing in polluted air is terrifying.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to reading your posts. You have such a voice that comes through in your writing. I was really surprised to hear that pollution can just sit around for years before it dissipates. So even if we were to cut it off cold turkey, the pollution would linger for years before the earth becomes free of the damage we've created.
ReplyDeleteI have known that air pollution has been one of the main effects of climate change, but the statistic that it makes up 99% of the planet is extremely shocking. How do we expect these conditions to escalate if we don't act on reducing greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible?
ReplyDeleteThis statistic is shocking. It really makes you think about the places where the air pollution is considered "bad" and how bad it must be if we are all polluted.
ReplyDeleteIt’s shocking to learn that almost everyone on Earth is breathing polluted air. If clean air isn’t guaranteed anymore, what does that mean for our future health and the planet’s well-being?
ReplyDeleteIt's shocking that 99% of the world breathes polluted air. Reducing fossil fuels is definitely needed for healthier air and a cleaner planet.
