The Death of Renewable Energy from Trump

Since the election, and Trump's inauguration, the new President has quickly done his best to revoke and destroy renewable energy and other green acts. Renewable energy is identified as a way of collecting power that does not deplete from a source. Solar and wind power are among these energy sources where one can never worry about running out of stored power. Wind energy often works with a propeller being pushed by the wind, which in turn converts the turning into kinetic and ready-to-use energy. Solar using solar panels to collect the UV rays from the sun and turn this thermal heat into electricity. Both of these methods are renewable energy sources which means they can be used daily and converted without depleting an energy source like fossil fuels or coal.

Upon entering office, Trump has quickly shown his favoritism towards the big oil companies and other non-renewable profits, as he started the term. He quickly withdrew from the Paris Agreement, a deal to protect the environment and holding countries responsible for their emissions and pollutants. But the newest addition to these anti-environment acts is the shutting down and de-funding of renewable energy sources. Trump stated

“We will drill, baby drill,”

Putting this faith and money into oil and drilling companies is not only bad for funding clean and green acts, but also hurting the environment at the same time. When drilling and oil companies mine into the Earth, they often are accompanied by clear-cutting and deforestation as well as oil spills and other pollution forms. Trump also affirmed that he was planning to go back and revoke the previously implemented laws and regulations set by the Biden administration for environmental acts and green initiatives.

Without proper acts and plans in place, we will continue to see negative impacts from both climate change and global warming. The rising temperature levels in both the air and water are catastrophic to marine and wildlife. Not to mention the damage and pollution to ecosystems and habitats across the world. In class we discussed migration of both people and animals to combat these environmental changes, yet as Trump continues to pollute and defund protective plans, these events are much more likely to continue happening and occurring.

When we use solar panels and thermal heat energy sources, we are protecting the planet by absorbing some of the UV rays that would otherwise be left to sit and heat up the atmosphere.

Many countries including Canada have announced their displeasure with Trump's reversal of Green Acts and environmental protection plans. Scientists have predicted an increase in costs of goods including tariffs and such as well as an increased price tag on power and electricity. Many oil companies and thousands of big fossil fuel companies will thrive on the market with the budget Trump has promised to fulfill. Yet, our environment will be the one taking the cost. Solar and wind energy are non-invasive ways that do not disrupt or destroy the area around their placement. They require little maintenance and production is more stable and reliable. It also eliminates plastic and product waste and limits risks of pollution like oil spills and mining accidents.

  1. A quote I've remembered was, "Drill baby, drill". I find it to be such a money grab for increasing fossil fuel use. Certainly, wish renewable energy was spreading here as it is in other countries.

  2. (Excluding biomass from your chart above,) Renewable energy is such a beautiful thing! It takes us away from constantly burning up previous carbon sources and toward a clean, and now cheaper form of energy. It is madness to foster fossil fuels at this point!

  3. One thing I want to mention is the fact that you included how other countries are displeased with trump's actions towards climate change. I really do think it speaks a lot about how worried we should currently be for our future.

  4. The contrast between the long-term benefits of clean energy and the short-term gain of fossil fuel investments is shocking. It’s frustrating to see policies that favour industries known to cause environmental harm when there are viable alternatives that could help mitigate climate change.

  5. It feels like we are moving in the wrong direction when it comes to the next 4 years. This favoritism Trump shows to the oil companies if destorying our planet.

  6. My favorite type of renewable source is biomass, because there is so many uses for it, but I wish the oil companies weren't in trumps pocket, but I can't be too surprised that a business man wants to work with other big businesses.

  7. I agree, after reading Nomad Century assisting other countries and trying to improve the livelihood of people in other countries helps not only the other country but also the United States. It seems like it was stolen from the U.S. and potentially receiving countries.

  8. We as American need renewable sources of energy/fuel to change our path of destruction we keep causing people. I do believe over time we can reduce emissions but I'm sure the big companies will fight back to keep the money they have gotten for years
